In Galveston, I'm planning on staying the night before the cruise at the Best Western Beachfront Inn. Don't think it is the newest of best, but do think it has WiFi, is across the street from a grocery store (Kroger's?) and within walking distance of some restaurants. Not sure where the nearest liquor store is, but I may well discover.
If flying into Houston, there are a number of ways to Galveston. I used to do a one way rental from Enterprise which would run under $30, but now the seem to be charging an obscene drop-off fee. SuperShuttle is a possibility if in a group. I think they quoted me $100 per van from Hobby and maybe $145 van from Bush.
Wouldn't mind finding some oysters for lunch and certainly some seafood for diner. Landry's is one of the restaurants within walking distance so I'm thinking of heading there for dinner.
Don't know if the hotel has a shuttle, but even if so, I tend to take taxis to avoid the confusion and waiting around that always seems to accompany free shuttles.
Ended up with the $35 Galveston Limo shuttle from the Hobby airport. Not bad at all and faster than some of the other options.
Best Western is, well, a Best Western, but the Internet access is smoking - at least the wired access. Not sure if available in all rooms, but sure is in mine. The room also has a fridge and a small microwave and the A/C blows ice cold. Another great feature is that it is next door to Kroger's for that last minute shopping. No liquor in the grocery stores here, but Kroger's does sell wine and beer and I packed my bar, anyway.
This was too bizarre - locking the toilet paper dispenser.
Kroger's
Tortuga is right next door, but I opted for the Popeye's
Almost there!
